WAVES OF HEAT rolled across the asphalt; the inside of the Ford was like a crematorium. Vicky could feel her heart hammering like a drum in her temples. She didn’t trust herself to say anything to the girl crouched on the passenger seat until they had pulled out of the parking lot and headed down a side street through the shade of overhanging branches. “You didn’t tell me about the briefcase. What else haven’t you told me?” She tried for a neutral tone. Angela Running Bear wasn’t the first client to conceal information.
“I didn’t think it was important.” The girl shifted around, and, for a moment, Vicky had the sense that if she pressed too hard, Angela would bolt. Throw open the door and jump.
“I can’t help you if you don’t trust me. You knew Skip had four hundred thousand dollars with him.”
Angela didn’t say anything.
Vicky could feel the girl’s eyes lasering in on her. She tried again to swallow her anger. “Did you and Skip have plans for the future?”
“Plans to get out of here.”
Vicky took a right turn. The white Victorian was halfway down the block.
“Why did Skip want to leave? He had a good practice, a life here.”
“He hated it here. He wanted to be free. No clients, no phones ringing. Free as the breeze. We were gonna take off. See some of the big world. Get the hell off the rez.”
“What about Deborah Boynton?”
Angela didn’t say anything. She had turned away and was staring out the window.
“Skip’s former girlfriend.” Vicky pushed on. “Was she still in the picture?”
“No.”
Vicky tapped on the brake and turned into the narrow driveway. “I think you know Skip was still seeing her. Is Madden right? Did he break up with you?”
“I told you, Skip loved me. We were going away together. We were going to live in Mexico.”
“When, Angela? Did he say when that would happen?”
“When everything was ready.”
Vicky pulled up close to the small house. “Do you mean when he had the money? Is that why he cleaned out his bank account? Was he getting ready to leave?”
“I don’t know. I don’t know anything.” Angela yanked on the handle and pushed open the door.
“You need a lawyer you can trust,” Vicky said.
Angela had started to get out. She turned back. “What? You’re dumping me? Lawyers can’t dump people whenever they want. Skip never did that.”
“You’re holding out on me. I can’t work with secrets.” God, what did this black-eyed girl blinking back the tears know? Murder? Abduction? What was she involved in? “I’m trying to level with you. I may have a conflict of interest here. For your own good, you need another lawyer, someone you can open up with. Maybe you should think about going back to the rez for a while.”
Angela jumped out and leaned down, peering into the Ford, eyes fierce and blazing. “You don’t know me. You don’t know anything about me. Don’t tell me what to do. You’re not on the rez. You got off.
